Cloud Computing Conference Held at KAU

A Cloud Computing conference was hosted by the Deanship of Information Technology of King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in collaboration with Hewlett-Packard Saudi Arabia (HP) on October 1st, 2011 at King Faisal Convention Center.

Cloud Computing is a new technology designed to deliver computing as a service rather than a product, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices via the Internet.

The event was launched by Dr Zohair Damanhori, KAU Vice President for Development, in the presence of a number of KAU deans, representatives of public and private institutions and scores of students.

Addressing the audience, Dr Damanhori expressed his delight with KAU's hosting of the event, emphasizing the importance of discussing an issue known as the technology that would cause a major shift in IT.

He was also appreciative of Dr Khalid Hussain, Dean of Information Technology, for his concerted efforts towards improving and upgrading KAU's electronic infrastructure.

In his speech, Dr Hussain stressed KAU's commitment to offering first-class services to its KAU and non-KAU customers in pursuit of maintaining a leading position among the world's most technologically advanced universities.

He was also thankful to HP for patronizing the event, and to HE Prof Osama S. Tayyeb, KAU President, for his continuous and unswerving support to the IT Deanship.

Dr Ayman Fayoumi, IT Vice Dean for Technical Affairs, gave a lecture to highlight the attributes of the new technology and the unique challenges facing KAU IT, including the diversity of needs and ever-expanding workload.

Cloud Computing is a style of computing where scalable and elastic IT related capability are provided as a service to external customers using Internet technologies, according to Dr Fayoumi.

Xavier Poisson Gouyou Beauchamps, EMEA Converged Infrastructure and Cloud Computing Sales Director of HP in the Middle East and North Africa, gave a two-session lecture in which he explained the role of the new technology in better building future, accelerating business processes and reducing time to revenue.

According to him, Cloud Computing is one of the paths governments can take in order to transform, extend and make more efficient their relationship with citizens.
